Spanish band Mercromina will reunite in 2027 to mark the 25th anniversary of «Bingo», released by Subterfuge in 2002. Three concerts and a reissue are planned.

Why this particular album matters

When «Bingo» appeared in 2002, Mercromina had already moved beyond the shadow of Surfin’ Bichos. The fourth album pushed further into electronic textures, repetitive bass figures and introspective arrangements. Songs such as «Chaqueta de Pana», «La Vida Mix» and «Entrevista a un Abducido» offer different ways into that experimentation. The music was interested in the possibilities of sound and structure rather than always placing a lead vocal at the centre.

The 2027 reunion brings back Joaquín Pascual, Carlos Cuevas, José Manuel Mora, Carlos Sánchez and Enrique Borrajeros. Revisiting the material with the original line-up could be more revealing than a nostalgia exercise: the musicians will be responding to choices made a quarter-century earlier. Barcelona’s Sala Wolf hosts the first date on 13 March, followed by Madrid’s Sala Copérnico on 17 April and Valencia’s Loco Club on 30 April.

Formed in the aftermath of Surfin’ Bichos, Mercromina developed an adventurous language within Spanish alternative music. Their fourth album, «Bingo», moved further towards instrumental textures and introspective atmospheres.

Rediscovering an adventurous record

Not every anniversary justifies a reunion. «Bingo» has a stronger claim because it represents a distinct artistic moment in the story of Spanish independent music. Its arrangements moved beyond the familiar shape of alternative pop songs, giving electronics, repeated bass patterns and unusual textures a larger role. The musicians are now returning to that material with another quarter-century of experience. The essential question is not whether they can recreate precisely the sound of 2002, but whether those compositions reveal new possibilities when played together again by the people who originally imagined them.

Joaquín Pascual, Carlos Cuevas, José Manuel Mora, Carlos Sánchez and Enrique Borrajeros will return. The appeal is not simply nostalgia but hearing the original musicians revisit an album built around experimentation.
