Tune-Yards have never needed to slow down to make an emotional point. Their new single «The Ones», released on 23 October 2026, places a message about showing up for other people inside an energetic, restless groove. Merrill Garbus and Nate Brenner build the song around driving bass, marching percussion, sweeping brass and the bright contrast of celeste. Rather than turning solidarity into a solemn statement, the duo make it something physical.

Garbus describes the track as an acknowledgment of the ways people have failed to support one another, followed by a decision to be present now. The rhythm gives that thought a communal dimension: a song about standing beside others that asks listeners to move together.

How the arrangement carries the message

Bass and percussion supply a forward-driving foundation, while brass broadens the sound and celeste adds a contrasting shimmer. The combination sits between soul-funk, adventurous pop and the rhythmic experimentation that has defined the group for two decades. These are the musical elements identified in the official announcement; they provide a clearer way into the record than a vague description of it as merely upbeat.

Tune-Yards have long enjoyed bringing competing sounds into a single musical space. Garbus’ vocal style, unusual rhythmic patterns and a taste for sudden changes have allowed relatively direct melodies to live inside unpredictable arrangements. On «The Ones», that approach serves an especially accessible idea without flattening the band’s personality.

Two decades of making pop sound different

Garbus founded Tune-Yards in 2006, developing a homemade aesthetic that reached wider audiences through «BiRd-BrAiNs» and the acclaimed «w h o k i l l» in 2011. Brenner’s role expanded until the project had become a genuine creative partnership, as reflected in «sketchy.» in 2021.

The sixth Tune-Yards album, «Better Dreaming», was released by 4AD in May 2025, followed by the EP «Tell the Future With Your Body». The duo have also worked extensively in film and television, including music for Boots Riley’s «Sorry to Bother You», «I’m A Virgo», and the 2026 film «I Love Boosters». This single therefore follows a period of sustained creative activity rather than a prolonged absence.

A standalone single with a live destination

«The Ones» is currently presented as a standalone song, not as the lead single from an announced album. It arrives ahead of a nine-date North American tour, «The Ones That Love You», beginning on 5 November in Chicago. The itinerary also includes Louisville, Cleveland and Boston, with Rituals of Mine supporting the dates.

The link between the song and tour titles feels intentional: music about connection will soon be played in spaces dedicated to shared listening. That is part of the lasting appeal of Tune-Yards. They can make pop strange, emotionally lucid and collective at the same time.
