Lambchop let MJ Lenderman and other guests take the lead on «Demoed»
Lambchop announce Demoed for November 20 with MJ Lenderman, Circuit des Yeux, Alan Sparhawk and more.

Could Lambchop still be Lambchop without Kurt Wagner singing? The Nashville group are asking exactly that question with «Demoed», a seven-track EP due digitally on 20 November 2026 and on vinyl on 5 February 2027. Its first available track is «Weakened», newly interpreted by MJ Lenderman.
Rather than commissioning conventional covers, Wagner and his collaborators gave a group of musicians the original guitar demos behind songs from August’s «Punching the Clown». The guests were encouraged to keep the arrangements relatively simple but free to respond creatively. Each recording therefore returns to an early version of the song rather than copying its fully produced final form.
A remix in reverse
Wagner’s idea is to shift attention away from the familiar figure at the microphone and toward the compositions. He has considered whether Lambchop might continue as a collective creative idea rather than an identity dependent on one performer. «Demoed» is a practical experiment in that thought, not an announcement of his retirement.
It also raises an interesting question about authorship: which parts of a song must remain for listeners to recognize it? The melody, a particular rhythm, the writer’s voice, or something less tangible? Allowing different musicians into those original sketches may reveal dimensions that their creators did not originally emphasize.
Seven songs and seven new perspectives
MJ Lenderman sings and plays guitar and bass on «Weakened», joined by Andrew Broder. Circuit des Yeux and Alan Sparhawk share «A Doctor in the House», Channy Leaneagh contributes to «Stella», Dan Wriggins interprets «White People», Lauren Auder sings «The New World Wave», Flock of Dimes takes «Afterburner» and More Eaze closes with «Andrew Jackson Asshat».
This is more than a list of fashionable names. Their different relationships to voice, rhythm and atmosphere promise a variety of approaches to material that listeners have only recently encountered. That is why the concept is more intriguing than a traditional tribute release.
Another transformation for Lambchop
The group have long explored spaces beyond alternative country, incorporating electronics, chamber arrangements and unconventional recording methods. A project built on the possibility of changing its lead voice feels like another logical extension of that restless identity.
Only «Weakened» is available ahead of the EP’s November release via Merge/City Slang. Listen to the first track and explore «Demoed».
