After a song full of questions, María de la Flor has found an image of light. «Girasol», released on 28 October 2026, is the Madrid songwriter’s second preview of her forthcoming album. It follows «Desbocada y contenida» and moves from uncertainty toward the idea of finding a direction of one’s own, drawing on folk songwriting and Latin-jazz influences.

The sunflower provides more than a decorative title. A plant turning toward light becomes an image for recovery and movement after a period of confusion. The previous single examined inner contradictions; «Girasol» suggests a way forward, with a musical arrangement that opens the songwriting to a broader instrumental palette.

An intimate recording with an expansive sound

The new album was recorded and produced by Roy Borland at his home studio in the mountains near Madrid. The location suggests a domestic atmosphere, but the song’s credits reveal a rich ensemble: María Martín sings and plays violin and Spanish guitar; Borland contributes piano and backing vocals; Carlos Clerencia plays cello; Marc Piñol drums and percussion; Joaquín Sánchez clarinet; and Carlos Otero double bass and backing vocals. Fernando Delgado handled mastering.

Those instruments help explain a sound that can draw from traditional acoustic songwriting without remaining confined to it. Clarinet, double bass and percussion offer a different conversational space from the familiar singer-and-guitar format.

Between folk writing and Latin-jazz arrangement

The instrumental credits are not merely evidence that a larger ensemble took part. They help explain the musical territory the songwriter is exploring. Spanish guitar and violin connect the new work to acoustic tradition; clarinet, double bass and piano suggest a more flexible relationship between melody, rhythm and accompaniment. The contrast gives the song room to expand without abandoning its intimate centre.

That balance is central to the emerging identity of the album. The songwriting remains personal, but the recording does not treat intimacy as a requirement for minimalism. Instead, different musicians can respond to the emotional direction of the composition and introduce unexpected colours.

What comes after «Desbocada y contenida»?

The two singles already outline an artistic movement: first a need to confront difficult questions, then a wish to follow a source of clarity. The thematic continuity matters as much as the genre descriptions. It suggests the record will be interested in personal change rather than merely assembling tracks with similar production.

A precise release date for the full album has not been confirmed in the announcement. For now, «Girasol» is a valuable entry point to the work of an artist building a distinctive language between Spanish songwriting, indie-folk and jazz-inflected arrangements.
