SAY IT LOUD! Vol.17 asks Barcelona to discover music beyond the algorithms
SAY IT LOUD! returns to Barcelona November 5–14, with David Rodigan, DJ Koco, Colectiva and a community-focused program.

When did you last attend a show without knowing much about the artist beforehand? That feeling of genuine discovery sits at the heart of SAY IT LOUD! Vol.17, returning to Barcelona with a series of free activities and a central concert on Saturday 14 November 2026 at Paral·lel 62. The festival does more than assemble different genres: it advocates a way of finding, making and sharing music that is not entirely dictated by popularity metrics.
From Jamaican sound systems to Japanese turntablism
Headliner David Rodigan has spent more than four decades sharing Jamaican music through radio, sound systems and festivals. Japan’s DJ Koco aka Shimokita brings an entirely different approach to the turntables, building intricate sets around seven-inch records. Their presence emphasizes the history and craft of DJ culture, not simply the size of a headline act.
Live performances include Colectiva, whose music blends jazz with Afro-Latin rhythms, and Catalan group Muniats, committed to organic instruments and groove. Colombian rapper La Valentina, based in Paris, and Dance Crasher Sound, dedicated to Jamaican vinyl selections, complete the bill. The result is an itinerary connecting different scenes rather than a lineup chasing one dominant trend.
A festival that exists beyond one stage
The public program begins with an exhibition by photographer Jep Jorba, «Music is my occupation, media vida entre cámaras e instrumentos», opening on 5 November at 7 pm at Ateneu L’Harmonia. On 7 November, from 1 to 8 pm, the same venue hosts the free Sound System Pel Poble event. A discussion on underground and mainstream culture follows on 12 November at 7:30 pm in Casa Sidral.
These events matter because music scenes grow through photographs, conversations, shared spaces and self-built sound systems as well as through headline concerts. They make the audience participants in cultural life rather than simply ticket holders.
Independent discovery as a deliberate choice
Established in 2008, SAY IT LOUD! has hosted artists including Little Simz, Ezra Collective, Sister Nancy, Akua Naru and La Delio Valdez. Its cooperative model has remained part of its identity across seventeen editions. That does not mean independent culture is free of financial challenges; rather, the festival has made a conscious choice about how to organize and present music.
The idea overlaps with Mewsick’s interest in discovery without predetermined rankings, but our editorial reason for covering the festival is practical: it gives people an opportunity to encounter artists and musical communities they might not have looked for themselves.
Dates and attendance
The main concert starts at 8:30 pm on 14 November at Paral·lel 62. Several surrounding activities are free, and the photography exhibition continues beyond the main week. The festival website provides current details and ticket information.
