Cardinal Black choose the sound of a band in a room for «Second Sign of Life»
Cardinal Black announce the self-produced Second Sign of Life for 29 January 2027, led by «Saving Grace» and recorded at Clouds Hill Studios.

After learning how to command a room on tour, a band might naturally want its next album to sound bigger than ever. Welsh trio Cardinal Black are going the other way. Their third studio album, Second Sign of Life, arrives on 29 January 2027 via Thirty Tigers, with lead single “Saving Grace” offering an early look at a record designed to preserve the chemistry of musicians playing together rather than pile on more production.
Why “Saving Grace” took almost ten years
Chris Buck’s guitar and Tom Hollister’s vocals drive the single, a song about the person who offers stability when life grows difficult. Hollister began working on it around a decade ago, but its arrangement and words did not feel connected to his experience. The band’s present-day sound has finally given an old idea a convincing setting.
That history provides a useful way into the new album. Songwriting is rarely a straightforward march from first inspiration to finished recording. Sometimes a composition has to wait for the performers to become the musicians who can make sense of it.
Nine days at Clouds Hill
Cardinal Black recorded in June 2026 at Hamburg’s Clouds Hill Studios, booking nine days between European tour dates with Alter Bridge. After difficult early sessions in Hay-on-Wye, the band adopted a quicker, more instinctive approach. For the first time, they produced and engineered an album themselves, with touring bassist and engineer Sam Andrews contributing.
Despite having access to vintage studio equipment, the aim was restraint. The ten tracks address love, loss, ageing and the isolation of touring, while the arrangements allow space around Buck’s guitar, Hollister’s voice and Adam Roberts’ drums. This is not about avoiding detail: it is about making each detail earn its place.
A deliberate response to Midnight at the Valencia

Its predecessor, Midnight at the Valencia (2025), was a broader studio production recorded in Zurich. The new record arrives after increased recognition and sold-out headline dates in North America. Instead of chasing scale, the trio are treating familiarity, trust and the sound of their live lineup as their greatest resources.
Second Sign of Life contains ten songs, beginning with “Saving Grace” and ending with “There Was Everything”. A UK and Ireland headline tour starts in Wolverhampton on 30 March 2027, followed by European dates later in spring.
