LAIA ALCOLEA and Emilia Vega confront a false friendship on «No es oro»
Spanish singer LAIA ALCOLEA teams with Mexico's Emilia Vega for flamenco-pop rumba No es oro ahead of her next EP.

Not every song about a broken relationship is about romantic love. On «No es oro», Spanish artist LAIA ALCOLEA and Mexican singer Emilia Vega describe the painful realization that someone considered a friend was motivated by self-interest. Their vehicle is a flamenco-pop rumba whose movement contrasts with the disappointment at the centre of the story.
Learning where to draw the line
The song’s emotional turning point is not simply anger at another person. It is the moment of recognizing that kindness does not require accepting an unequal relationship forever. The narrators look back on a friendship that seemed genuine from the outside but became increasingly difficult to trust. That more nuanced theme makes the song recognizable beyond any specific personal anecdote.
The collaboration grew out of a shared experience. Emilia Vega has described discovering how closely her own story connected with LAIA’s and how much she enjoyed approaching a rumba, a musical style she would not have explored in quite the same way alone. Their voices are therefore part of the song’s emotional argument: two writers finding common ground across different musical backgrounds.
Why a rumba suits this story
Choosing flamenco-pop rather than a slow ballad gives the lyrics forward motion. The arrangement allows disappointment to become a decision about the future rather than a permanent state of sadness. The song belongs to LAIA ALCOLEA’s forthcoming EP, whose full release date has not yet been announced.
The combination of an accessible groove and a theme of boundaries makes «No es oro» worth considering beyond the novelty of a cross-border duet. Its point is not to stop trusting other people, but to learn how to protect trust without losing generosity.
A new stage, including Madrid’s Inverfest
LAIA ALCOLEA has been selected for Raising Voices Spain 2026, alongside Yoly Saa, Gala Nell, Carmen Lillo and Joanna Crass. The program will lead to the ICON CAMP Lanzarote 2027 songwriting and mentorship event. A nearer public date is 16 January 2027 at Sala Villanos in Madrid, as part of Inverfest.
For an artist building a broader repertoire, this single offers an account of collaboration that begins with songwriting itself. «No es oro» is about accepting what a friendship has become and deciding what to do next.
